I was asked to take part in a Mother’s Day interview by the awesome Mum on a Mission!

This Mother’s day I have interviewed Lauren from
Please introduce yourself
Hi I’m Lauren from My Square Peg Life, I am a single Mum to two children with Autism. I run an organization which supports children with an array of additional needs primarily in the West Midlands called Square Peg Foundation
Lauren what piece of advice would you give to another Mum in the same circumstances as you?
Don’t worry too much. I know it’s easy to say but there is a lot of scary information out there and nobody really knows what the future hold for any of us. Try not to focus on what you had imagined life would be like and go with the flow.
What’s the best piece of advice another Mum has given you?
Remember that you know your child best.
Who would play you in a movie of your life?
Anne Hathaway (wishful thinking!)
What are your plans for Mother’s Day this year?
This will be the first Mothers Day that I will have a lie in as it’s the children now sleep over at their Dad’s on a Saturday. It’ll be a blessing to get the lie in but double edged sword as I’ll miss them too.
If you could go back to the beginning, what would you tell yourself as a new Mum or as a Mum of a newly diagnosed child?
It’ll all be ok, but get ready to fight. It’s the system that is harder than the parenting.
What is the biggest battle you’ve faced as a Mum?
I had to go to two tribunals to get awarded the mobility element of DLA for Bella. It was very difficult time and took over 18 months, having to continually try and prove just how disabled your child is heart breaking.
If you were PM for the day what would you change to make life easier for Special Needs Mums?
I honestly don’t know, I would never want that power. I think if all service were connected better it would generally make life easier. If new buildings were made to be more disabled friendly in general (toilets we’re looking at you!)
What’s the best thing about being a Mum?
Having these two little monsters that you love more than anything. Who cares about their challenges when it matters.
Funniest moment as a mum?
Going anywhere with Bella is pretty amusing, she has no social understanding and will steal anything off people if she likes the look of it. It is usually limited to food but she has in the past been known to steal peoples phones and once an iPad (I do always return them!)
Who are your favourite Mum bloggers?
What is your life motto?
It’ll be fine!
Finally, if you won the lottery today, what’s the first thing you would buy?
A house! Immediately, fully adapted for all our needs with lots and lots of door and window locks!
